Telex from Malta. Daphne Caruana Galizia: Wrong to elect corrupt politicians

Questo articolo è disponibile anche in: Italian

We can no longer blame corrupt politicians because we can no longer deny corrupt politicians are a reflection of society, Daphne Caruana Galizia said on 5 June 2017, some months before she was brutally killed in Malta

RIGHT AND WRONG ARE NOT A POPULARITY CONTEST

The rightness or wrongness of a fact is not established by the number of people who believe it. The same can be said of actions and opinions. Of course it is wrong to vote to put corrupt politicians into power. Winning and losing are about the power to prevent wrongdoing or the power to perpetrate it.
In a democracy, it is people who vote for political parties, and not political parties which put themselves into power. We can no longer blame corrupt politicians because we can no longer deny corrupt politicians are a reflection of society.
There is something else I should say before I go: when people taunt you or criticise you for being “negative”, for failing to go with their flow, or for not adopting an attitude of benign tolerance to their excesses, bear in mind always that they, and not you, are the ones who are wrong.

Her sister Corinne Vella sent it as a telex to Ossigeno per l’Informazione on the occasion of the Concert for Press Freedom that was held in Rome on 21 June 2018 at the House of Jazz in Roma as part of the European Musica Day, to be read during the event.
