Speaking in the name of the National Order, Nadia Monetti said that “those who threaten a journalist harm all citizens and thus the journalist deserves to be defended by everyone. I support those who with the news shine a light on malfeasance. No citizen must be threatened. But when a journalist is threatened, the right of all citizens to be informed is threatened “.
Monetti, a council member of the National Order of Journalists, was speaking on Monday 22nd October 2018 in the Sala Koch of Palazzo Madama, the Italian Senate, in Rome, in a contribution at the conference organized by Ossigeno per l’Informazione on the occasion of the United Nations World Day to put an end to impunity for crimes against journalists.
Monetti recalled that recently the National Council approved the guidelines for the reform of the Order which will call upon “the Order of journalism to underline the function of this profession”. She also reiterated the commitment to supporting reporters threatened by organised crime with the “media escort” project. This, the delegate of the Odg underlined, applies to all citizens who support the values of the Constitution: “it is not admissible that we need heroes because the community withdraws from a duty which is everyone’s responsibility”.
